You’ll Learn The Techniques The Professionals Use
I have been building straw bale houses for many years. I want to show you how you can build with straw bales avoiding all the pitfalls I fell into when I first started out in straw bale construction.
Straw bale lends itself to the person who is interested in building their own structure, house, cottage, barn, or storage shed. You could of course hire a contractor to bale it for you, but I want to reassure you, it’s easier than you think to bale your own building.
In my straw bale instruction DVDs I show you the latest straw bale tools, techniques, and research so you will be able to build any size straw bale project without any prior straw bale building experience knowing you have the most up-to-date tools and techniques.
Our customer service is outstanding, your purchase is totally secure and safe, we respect your privacy, and we love our straw bale enthusiast friends!
| “Andrew Morrison’s great instructional DVD covers all aspects of building a post and beam type Straw Bale building. I must say that on a ‘return on investment’ basis this DVD beats any SB book several times over, hands down!
When you take into consideration the cost of SB books and then add the extensive time needed to read them, try to make sense of the diagrams and descriptions, its easy to see how a small investment on this DVD is a great deal either as a starting point to learn about SB building or as an extension to your existing reading. Even if you have some practical experience its unlikely that Andrew’s DVD isn’t going to pay for itself several times over. –Trevor Cryer www.strawbale.co.uk London, United Kingdom “Andrew, your DVDs are clear, concise and enjoyable. Anyone serious about straw bale construction will gain invaluable insights into their future project.” – Richard Power Stratford upon Avon, UK. “Andrew, We have all of your DVDs. Your DVDs are all excellent and contain the right amount of technical detail and even humor that makes them enjoyable to follow! – Jeff Hamilton The corner of N.W. Arkansas “I have never witnessed such thorough customer satisfaction as I have with your ongoing support. Although my structure is still in the planning stages (foundation this spring), I am so looking forward to putting all the ideas into play as well as a few of my own. One day I plan to sit down inside my own straw bale dwelling and think fondly of everything you have done to make it reality. Great job guys and keep it up.” – Carlos Jarrett Clendenin, WV “Andrew, Thank you for all the great support that you are responsible for in the straw bale home ‘DREAM!’ I have been holding my dream for over ten years now and your DVD on Post & Beam Straw bale construction with the Plaster DVD are by far the best instructions that I have seen. Books are great but nothing has come close to the support that I felt from your DVD set. Keep up the good work!” – Steve Petersen Wheat Ridge, Colorado “I find the information contained in the Straw bale DVDs to be invaluable; though books are very helpful, seeing the strawbaling process being carried out ‘live’ before your very eyes makes all the difference. Sometimes words are not enough–you need to see it being done to really get the hang of it. Thanks for making the straw bale process so accessible.” – Terry Gerling Edmonton, Alberta, Canada “Andrew I have watched your DVDs and read all the lessons. They are very well done for those of us who are all thumbs. After the lessons and DVDs I am sure I will be able to get it done with no problem, and if I do have a problem all the info I need is close at hand. Thanks.” – Gale Bachman Red Bluff, CA “The Post frame and Plastering DVDs were great. You make it look easy. Every question I had was answered in the DVDs.” – Shawn Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada |

| “I have attended other workshops on Straw Bale construction and bought several books on all aspects of straw bale construction and finishing, and have found these DVDS to be the absolute best, most informative, and easiest to understand if you want to build using straw bale. I look forward to new additions to this resource library to assist those of us that love the straw bale concept.
– C.A. Baldwin Loa, UT “Your DVDs are an inspiration, they illuminate and educate and are well worth buying.” – David Waller Bethesda, North Wales “Your straw bale DVDs have given me the confidence to begin my first project.” – Ron Gillentine Wofford Heights, CA “A few years ago I needed a new dog house. My guys needed something big and I needed to be able to get inside and keep it clean. It was looking like a pipe dream until I started getting your help with online lessons! I built my dogs a 2 room dog house I could walk in only slightly stooped. The 2 best things were 1-it is very comfortable for my dogs, and 2-I could afford it. I did it all by myself – because people thought I was nuts, but now everyone wants to see the straw dog house. Everyone wants one for themselves. All I did was read your lessons, and my first try out, I did it!” – Paula Lexington, SC “Andrew, I was so excited to receive your DVDs in the mail after reading your webpage. It was so well put together, and really a beautiful thing to watch. As a plasterer in Las Vegas, working on high-rise towers in the concrete jungle, it was a breath of fresh air to see what you can do with the natural resources of the Earth. Maybe some day, I will try my own straw bale house.” – Darren Enns Las Vegas, Nevada “I have really enjoyed the videos. They have really helped me to understand the building process with straw bale structures.” – Kim Mansfield TX USA “While drawing up my next house’s plans, I’m enjoying watching your set of DVDs I bought last December. They’re clear and straight to the point, free from jargon or silly technicalities common to most ‘how-to’ programs. Keep on with the good work.” – Marcus Cremonese Sydney, Australia “I always assumed there was enough info out there for a straw bale structure when I got around to building one but I did not expect the level of accessible information and professional support that Andrew Morrison is providing.” – Paul Liotsakis Alameda, California “The DVDs are a great resource, the explanations are clear, and it is fun and fascinating to watch them. They are not of the kind that show you the fun and easy bits (omitting the hard parts), they’re honest and explain very well what will hit you when you get involved with straw.” – Hubert Smits Erie, CO “Andrew’s Straw Bale DVDs are excellent. If you’re thinking of building, they offer invaluable assistance and information.” – Rick Knous Los Angeles, CA “Thanks to your Straw Bale Success lessons, I have decided to build a new home with Straw Bales. I would never have thought I would be able to do this on my own. Your DVDs and success stories have put me over the top and I am now ready and confident enough to do this.” – John Simpson Powell River, British Columbia “We really appreciate the straw bale construction and plastering DVD set. There is so much great information there that is going to help when we soon build our own straw bale house.” – Stacy Diven Colorado Springs, Colorado “I’ve been reading about straw bale buildings for a couple of years, but Andrew, I have to say you are a natural teacher. You deal with real issues in the lessons I’ve seen, and handle it with actual how-to answers. Great motivation to continue in my quest to become a resident of a straw bale home! Thanks.” – Sharon Waldie Columbus, OH USA “I have learned more about straw bale construction from these folks than from any other source.” – Ken le Masurier Fenelon Falls On Canada |

Chapter 8: NOTCHING BALES

When building with post and beam construction, quick and accurate notching is a “must know” skill.
• Learn how to accurately cut your notches the first time. No double cuts necessary.
• This part of the job can be slow and laborious. Save time with the right techniques.
• Learn what the right tools for this job are to save you time and money.
Chapter 9: STACKING BALES

Poorly stacked bale walls are weak and subject to collapse. Nothing is more frustrating than a completed wall toppling over. That should never happen!
• Learn how to set the first course securely to set the ‘foundation’ for the subsequent course.
• Learn how simple it can be to set up the layout properly.
• How to carry a “running bond pattern” around a room.
• Learn what impacts windows and doors have on the stacking pattern.
• See how to keep your walls plumb, saving you masses of time later on.
• Manage interior partition wall connections in the simplest way.
| “The knowledge contained here is absolutely a requirement for all who are contemplating building with straw. Whether you do it yourself or supervise the construction, this will keep you on track. Highly recommended!”– Frank Gregg
Lafayette, Colorado |
Chapter 10: STRENGTHENING BALE WALLS

Sometimes your baling pattern is interrupted and single columns of bales may be required. Without the proper installation techniques, that’s a recipe for a weak wall. Learn the technique which gives extra protection to your walls from out of plane loads.
• I’ll show you how to implement a simple but valuable technique using “squash blocks” to tighten up a wall.
• Learn how to tighten your walls to ease the process of plastering, yielding a much stronger finished project.
Chapter 11: TAMPING BALE WALLS

The old look of crooked, loose and wobbly bale walls is now only an option, not the norm. You can control the amount of undulation you have in your wall and create beautiful walls that match your personal standards.
• Learn the easiest and most effective ways to keep your walls plumb and straight.
• Know what tools to use for this process and how to use them.
Chapter 12: BALING TOP COURSE

This is one of the most exciting courses to bale because it signifies near completion of the baling stacking process. Don’t get ahead of the game though. Take your time and do it right.
• I’ll show you how to make the connections tight and secure.
• Learn a simple technique to lock your top course into place.
Chapter 13: CREATING WINDOW SEATS

Everyone loves the deep window seats and sills of straw bale walls. This chapter will give you the information you need to create your own beautiful seats. In this chapter I include valuable techniques such as:
• Bale stacking techniques for windows that land “off course.”
• How to make intricate notches to custom fit bales under windows and around framing.
• Adding structural support for custom seat finishes like wood, tile, concrete and more.
| “Andrew: Thanks so much for making the DVDs. My husband and I have learned much from them. Seeing the procedures was so much more clear than just reading about them in a book. Your work was meticulous and your words were precise. Keep up the good work. You’ve done a lot for SB enthusiasts.”
– Kathy Wells Cheraw, SC “I wish I would have had access to your materials before I built my last straw bale project.” — Trevor Lethbridge , Alberta CANADA |

• I’ll show you how to safely clean out your saw and return it to action.
Discover Now“The How-To Guide to Building With Straw Bales: Post and Beam” 2 DVD set with nearly 3 hrs of instruction |
Chapter 15: BALING TALL WALLS

Tall walls present their own sets of challenges as they can easily get flimsy if not stacked properly. With these techniques you can create sturdy and solid walls as high as 10′!
• Learn techniques to keep even the tallest walls tight and strong.
• I’ll share with you a trick of the trade using bales laid on edge.
• Learn how to keep tall walls plumb and straight.
• I even cover how to get your bales up at such a height, safely and without the risk of carrying heavy bales up a ladder.
Chapter 16: OUTSIDE CORNERS

If your house is any shape but round, you’ll have outside corners. The most common issue that happens at this stage is for walls to gradually ‘grow’ out of plumb. Learn how to keep that from happening.
• I’ll show you how to keep walls in line. A plumb corner is a happy corner!
• Be sure to watch how to interlock corners. Don’t miss this detail!
• Learn how to space your bales properly so that your corners are as strong as possible.
Chapter 17: STRING TRIMMING

Some people don’t bother with this step and I think that’s a mistake. A smooth wall is better in my opinion as it creates an easier surface to attach cabinets, etc… onto. It also means that you will use less plaster than on a wall with undulations and extra “chaff” because you won’t use this expensive material to try to ‘fill in’ depressions in your walls and to cover up the extra straw “chaff” sticking out of the plaster.
• Learn how to remove extra “chaff”, yielding a stronger plaster adhesion to your bale walls later on.
• I’ll show you how to do it right and how to avoid the common pitfall of carving hollows into your walls.
Chapter 18: WIRE MESH PREPARATION

Like string trimming, some people avoid wire mesh. I can’t think of a stranger thing to eliminate from the process. Solid preparation in this process will make your plaster stronger and your walls more durable. Here are some things you will learn how to do from this chapter:
• Prepare your walls for proper plastering like the professionals do.
• How to avoid the most common mistakes that ruin plaster jobs.
| “The DVD was very comprehensive and informative. I feel that I can tackle my straw bale building project with confidence now!”
–Bill Ashwell Kathmandu, Nepal “I have been studying straw bale construction for about a year. Your instructions have been the best I’ve encountered so far. You’ve already saved me many potential headaches. Thanks.” — Martha Currin Centreville, VA |
Chapter 19: CREATING NICHES

This is where the real art starts to come into play. You can create some amazing shapes with thick bale walls and the inclusion of niches makes them even more beautiful.
• Learn how to accurately place niches to retain symmetry around a room.
• See how to keep shapes consistent from one niche to another.
• I’ll cover some questions to consider when determining how deep or large to make your niches in the bale wall.
Chapter 20: ELECTRICAL

Running electrical wiring in straw bale walls is extremely safe if you know how to do it. In this chapter I’ll show you in detail the tricks I’ve learned over the years so that you can install your wiring safely and save time in the process. Here are some of the things that are covered in this comprehensive chapter:
• Never end up with an electrical box that’s out of plumb in the plaster.
• How to set up your boxes to always be flush with the plaster surface. (No mounded mud making up the difference.)
• I’ll share all of the new techniques I’ve created to speed up the installation process.
• Learn how to install to code so that your electrical inspectors will smile when they visit!
Chapter 21: WINDOW FLASHING

Get this right or you’ll have moldy, rotting walls. Okay, that’s a little extreme, but historically, most failures in straw bale homes come at wall openings (windows, doors, etc) and are the result of improper or missing flashing details. Be sure to get this part of your baling process done right to prevent major damage potential.
• I’ll show you step by step how to counter flash openings for extra protection.
• Learn the proper guidelines and rules so that you stay within industry standards and code (in North American codes at least).
• It’s all in the details. A simple 1/4″ off on your installation could be the difference between success and tears.
• Learn what the best materials for the job are and how to use them properly.
|
Chapter 22: PLASTER PREPARATION

Your plaster job is only as good as your substrate, so take preparation seriously. This is not a place to cut corners or to rush.
• Learn how to prepare wood surfaces to be plaster ready.
• See how to provide adequate backing and “plaster tooth”.
• I’ll show you which details to focus and pay attention to so that you don’t have plaster failure.
Chapter 23: BURLAP PATCHES

Sometimes stuffing loose straw into a stubborn hole is less than fun. Straw is cheaper than plaster so learn the tricks to keep the straw in place while providing adequate backing for the plaster.
• Learn how to create strong patches over holes in a bale wall.
Chapter 24: WIRE MESH APPLICATION

Some people don’t use wire mesh because they see it as unnecessary. I think it’s one of the MOST necessary parts of the construction process. It provides shear resistance, plaster reinforcement, out of plane resistance, as well as eliminates the need for pinning. Further, welded wire mesh facilitates better cabinet and electrical box installations, eases shaping of bale corners and creates a positive attachment from the foundation to the roof.
• Learn how to properly install mesh to provide all of the benefits listed above.
• I’ll show you a simple cutting jig that will save you literally hours of time when cutting your mesh.
• See how to cut welded wire mesh safely.
Chapter 25: SEWING WALLS

That’s one big needle! Yes it is and it’s a custom tool that will make your building stronger and easier to finish.
• Learn how to use custom baling needles to provide adequate strength to wire mesh.
• Learn what the spacing is for sewing and what knot to use for attachment.
• See the best way to sew your walls. Is it vertically or horizontally or diagonally? It does make a difference.
• I’ll show you what material to use for quick and strong sewing.
Chapter 26: MESH AROUND WINDOWS

Windows, doors, and transitions between different materials, i.e. wood to bale, are known for their ability to cause cracks in plaster. There are ways to deal with this problem. I’ll show you how in this chapter.
• Learn the proper order of operations for a clean plaster line with minimal cracking.
• I’ll show you what material to use on arched tops or round windows.
• Installation is key. Use the right material in the right place and make sure your installation is solid.
Chapter 27: KITCHENS

This chapter is so important. There are so many details in the kitchen from plumbing to cabinets that need to be addressed.
• Learn the newest, and strongest way to hang cabinets.
• Let’s talk plumbing. There’s a lot of it in a kitchen, and you’ll need to deal with. I’ll show you some tried solutions.
Chapter 28: ALIGNING WALL PLANES

This is something rarely talked about in most straw bale discussions. What happens when a framed wall with drywall runs into a bale wall in the same plane? Usually it doesn’t look good. I’ll show you why.
• I’ll show you how to think 10 steps ahead of the game and plan ahead to make this wall transition look good.

MORE TESTIMONIALS:
“Andrew, I have just about every straw bale book I can find and they are very educational, but being able to watch someone actually do each stage of the building process as they are teaching makes all the difference. I am currently building a Post and Beam Infill and was planning on contracting someone to do the stucco (very expensive) until I read the information about and ordered your plastering DVD. Thanks a million.”
– Tim King, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
“Andrew, I have had an interest in alternative building methods since I first got introduced to them in 70′s. I’ve acquired some land in Arkansas and can’t wait to start building straw bale structures beginning with a workshop, then a house. When I heard how fireproof straw bale construction is compared to stick framing I decided I can safely have my blacksmithing shop inside. Thanks again for your willingness to share your knowledge & experiences with us all.”
— Dean Hutchins, Mammoth Spring, Arkansas
“Strawbale.com, and all of the amazing resources found there, is the reason I started seriously considering building my own straw bale house in the first place. Your videos on Foundations, Straw Bale Construction, and Plastering provided the kind of step-by-step information that this straw bale novice needed to understand the process and to have the confidence to dive into my own project.”
– Steve Ives, Pagosa Springs, CO
“We (my children and I) love you web site and instructional videos. We are hoping to start our straw bale home this summer.”

– Kate Goldsworthy, Pagosa Springs, Colorado
“Hi Andrew. I’ve been thinking about building a straw bale home for several years and collected a vast number of tips. Nothing came anywhere close to the package you were putting together on your DVDs. So incredible complete and comprehensive, I have thrown most of my collection out. Your disk is all one needs to go from slab to rooftop. I almost gave up my initial dream of building with straw bales – fortunately I don’t have to do that now… ”
– Chris Bschaden, Charleston, New Brunswick, Canada
“Of the three Straw Bale DVDs I’ve invested in so far, Andrew’s was by far the most informative. He doesn’t skip any of the steps and gives good detail on how to go from foundation to the finish coat of plaster. I feel like I could complete a small project on my own based on what he’s taught me. Thanks for continuing your efforts to educate people about the wonders of straw bale construction!”
