Ask Andrew

Do you have a question about your straw bale project that you really want the answer to, but can’t find an answer anywhere?  Maybe you have a general question about straw bale construction that is limiting your ability to move forward with your dreams of building a straw bale house and, once again, you can’t find the answers you need. Access to an expert straw bale builder would certainly be helpful, but how many of those do you know?

Well, you can ask me! I’ve worked in the field of straw bale construction for upwards of 15 years and have consulted with hundreds of people in that time, helping them towards achieving their goals of building with bales. I’ve also taught hundreds of people, hands-on at my straw bale workshops, and in that time, I’ve learned so much about how straw bale projects come together successfully, what slows them down or gets them stuck in departmental reviews, what keeps them on budget, and what pushes them to failure.  I can share this information with you in order to help you achieve the success you seek.

In fact, I have tried to do just that in my blog by publishing mountains of free information, all designed to bring you success. That said, sometimes a question is more personal, or more specifically related to your project than I can answer in a blog format. That’s why I created the “Ask Andrew” option.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You discover a question to which you would like the answer.
  2. You contact me through this site by pressing the “Check Out” button below.
  3. Enter your question in the “comments” field at the bottom of the check out page.
  4. I research your question as necessary and respond back to you within 48 hours.
  5. I follow the “thread” through to the end.
  6. All questions are handled via email.
  7. The cost for each question/thread is $40, start to finish.

Each “thread” may contain several emails back and forth, with the original question answered by the end of our conversation. Keep in mind that some questions may not be practical to answer via email or may be beyond the scope of this arena. In which case, the author of the question will be given the option to engage in a consulting relationship or simply retract the question (we will  discuss our options together and a refund may be appropriate in some cases).

This is not consulting, per se, as the relationship is held to one question of your asking. If you have more questions, or feel like you need more in depth input from me, I encourage you to visit my consulting website and review the many options available to you there.

POST AND BEAM

In a POST AND BEAM system, framing members provide the structural support for a building while the straw is infilled as insulation. This is the most common type of straw bale construction.

LOAD BEARING

In a LOAD BEARING structure, the bales themselves are used as the structural framing element of the building. After compressing the bale walls, a roof is installed.
